Serious crime investigated by St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office down 16 percent in 2012 compared with 2011, according to Sheriff Mascara

Serious crime investigated by the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office dropped by 16 percent in 2012 compared with 2011, according to Sheriff Ken J. Mascara.

And serious crime is down 20 percent since 2000, Sheriff Mascara said.

"The largest percentage drops were in robberies, down 38 percent since 2011, and burglaries, down 25 percent compared with 2011," said Sheriff Mascara. "Sadly, one category that saw an increase was in forcible sexual offenses, which increased from 20 in 2011 to 26 in 2012. We believe that an increased willingness by victims to report these crimes accounts for this increase."

Serious crime had declined by 7 percent in the first six months of 2012 compared with the same time period in 2011.

Compared with 20 years ago, serious crime investigated by the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office has dropped by 40 percent. "Considering the county's population increase since 1993 and the multi-year economic problems faced by the county, the 2012 crime statistics are good news for the people of St. Lucie County," Sheriff Mascara said.
