St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office investigates fatal vehicle crash, according to Sheriff Mascara
The St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office is investigating a two-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon that claimed the life of a U.S. Postal Service employee, according to Sheriff Ken J. Mascara.

Juan Carlos Riestra, 53 (DOB 2/10/1960), of 1754 Sanderling Lane, Fort Pierce, was pronounced dead at 3:06 this morning at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center and Heart Institute, Fort Pierce.

He was taken by St. Lucie County Fire-Rescue ambulance to the hospital following the accident which took place in the 10600 block of South Indian River Drive (north of Walton Road) in unincorporated St. Lucie County, Sheriff Mascara said.

Riestra was driving south in a U.S. Postal Service mail delivery truck as a 16-year-old female from Jensen Beach was driving north in a 2004 Nissan Xterra, according to deputies. They said that she approached a slight right-hand curve and continued straight at the curve, crossing the double yellow line and sideswiping the mail truck.

Deputies said the left front of the SUV initially struck the left front of the mail truck. Then the left front tire and rim of the SUV sheared off causing the spindle to strike the left rear wheel of the mail truck. This caused the mail truck to rotate counterclockwise and roll over on its right side, coming to rest about 60 feet south of the point of impact.

Riestra, who was not wearing his lap belt or separate shoulder belt, fell out of the open driver's side (right side) door, and the vehicle rolled on top of him, according to deputies.

The female in the other vehicle was transported by county fire-rescue ambulance to the hospital where she was treated and released.

The case remains under investigation with no decision at this time on the possibility of charges.
