Sgt. Gary Morales, 35, a 13-year veteran of the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office, was shot and killed this morning in the line of duty, according to St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken J. Mascara.

At 9:28 a.m., deputies made a traffic stop in the 3200 block of Naylor Terrace, just south of Edwards Road, south of Fort Pierce in unincorporated St. Lucie County. At some point during the traffic stop, a suspect got out of his vehicle and shot Sgt. Morales who was in his patrol car.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family," Sheriff Mascara said.
