Found and Evidence Property

Citizens, eighteen years of age and older, may pick up their items classified as found property by providing proof of ownership, if possible, and photo identification. It is also requested that the Sheriff's Office case number be provided to expedite the request.

In most situations, all evidence obtained during investigations must be held until the criminal case is disposed. Release of property held for evidentiary purposes will only be granted with authorization from the case detective, the state attorney's office, or by court order.

Unclaimed property that is no longer required to be held is disposed of through Property Bureau's online auction site that is accessible to Internet users at http://www.propertyroom.com. A unique feature of this site is "Stealitback," which allows private citizens to register serial numbers of lost or stolen items they reported to law enforcement. In the event an item is received from a participating law enforcement agency, Property Bureau will return it to the agency the theft was reported to for its return to the rightful owner.

For more information, or to schedule an appointment for property pick up, please contact the Evidence Unit at (772) 462-3298 on Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM.
