Education

Major Tighe was certified as a Florida corrections officer in 1982 and a law enforcement officer in 1986. He completed his Associate of Science Degree in 1978 from Bristol Community College in Fall River, Massachusetts. In 1996, he completed his Bachelor of Science Degree from Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida.

Career

In 1980, Major Tighe began his career with the Massachusetts Department of Corrections before relocating to Florida were he has spent the last 36 years. Prior to coming to the St Lucie County Sheriff's Office in 2002, his responsibilities were with the Broward Sheriff's Office. While with the Broward Sheriff's Office, he started as a Detention Deputy, working his way to Lieutenant Colonel - Director, overseeing 1,930 administrators, managers, supervisors and line staff with an inmate population over 4,700. Other areas of his job experience include Central Intake, Inspections and Accreditation.

Major Tighe has experience in policy development, strategic planning, security technology, and corrections operation management. His vast knowledge and experience in the design and construction of correctional facilities includes assignments as the lead project manager on several correctional design and construction projects including new construction for two pods (576) additional beds for St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office completed in year 2006, a $29 million dollar direct supervision detention facility for Broward County Sheriff’s Office, and working in Jamaica on assignment with the  Jamaican Defense Force on the design, construction and strategic planning of a 1,000 bed remand center. 

Since Major Tighe's career began, he has had many opportunities and challenges which assisted him to arrive where he is today.

Community Service

Involvement with community programs and resources that aid in improving the life of individuals who unfortunately make wrong decisions and end up in the criminal justice system is one of Major Tighes’s on-going interests. Some of these include programs for substance abuse, mental health, religious learning and education. 

Major Tighe understands the lack of basic resources including transportation, housing, jobs, and food are contributors to individuals’ criminal behavior. He formed and maintains a close network with a multitude of agencies including the County, Public Defender, Judges, State Attorneys, Chaplains, Mental Health Facilities, the Health Department and others in an effort to link individuals to these vital resources and services to improve their lives during and after their incarceration.
